Financial constraints source of mass player exodus from GPL – Painstil

Ex-Ghanaian International, John Painstil has attributed the massive player exodus from Ghana to other countries to financial constraints.

According to him, this situation has drastically affected the quality of the Ghana league.

“Running football is a business, so if the player is young and has the opportunity to go why not. You need to have a squad if you want to do business because the player can be 16 years and a club in Europe can buy for a long-term contract and the club owners need to get a return so I don’t think there’s a problem with that…,” he said.

The former Berekum Arsenal player made the statement during the Ghana Football Awards ceremony held over the weekend.

Painstil further opined that it is the major reason why most clubs in the country sell a majority of their key players abroad.

He suggested club owners do not stick to the idea of building a one-man team to avoid being affected whenever a mass sale of players hits the team.

“When you are building a team you need to build the structure well so that you have many players. Don’t build around two or three players,” the former West Ham United and Fulham man said.
