Government indefinitely suspends GH₵1 Fuel Levy

Must Read

The government has indefinitely suspended the GH₵1 levy on every litre of petrol and diesel, which was set to commence on Monday, June 16, 2025.

This announcement was made by Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, Esq., in a statement released on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Mr Rockson stated, “The implementation date for the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), which would have taken effect from Monday, June 16, 2025, has been postponed after consultations with stakeholders. A new effective date will be communicated in due course.”

This development follows a directive from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) issued on June 13, which noted the postponement of the levy’s operationalisation.

The authority emphasised the necessity for further technical and operational readiness before the levy could be implemented.

Originally designed to raise an estimated GH₵5.7 billion annually, the Energy Sector Recovery Levy was intended to alleviate Ghana’s substantial energy sector debt, exceeding $3 billion, while ensuring a reliable fuel supply for power generation.
