Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a planned three-day shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant to undertake emergency maintenance works on transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema.
In a statement signed by Chief Manager of PR & Communications, Stanley Martey, the Company said the works will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday August 8, 2026.
According to GWL, routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated sections along the pipelines that require urgent replacement to prevent major failures, reduce water losses, and ensure reliable supply.
To facilitate the exercise, five sections of varying lengths of the transmission pipelines will be isolated. As a result, customers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience temporary interruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.
The affected areas include the entire eastern part of Accra, including Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, all communities within the Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities. Other affected areas are Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku, and nearby towns.
GWL said its engineers and technical teams will work continuously throughout the three-day period to complete the replacement works and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
The company is appealing to all affected customers to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the maintenance works and use available water judiciously during the period.
Critical institutions, including hospitals and other essential service providers, have been encouraged to make contingency arrangements. GWL added that where feasible, water tankers will be deployed to support selected critical institutions during the maintenance period.
The Company said the intervention is a necessary investment to safeguard one of the country’s most strategic water transmission systems, and that replacing the deteriorated sections will significantly reduce pipeline bursts and improve long-term reliability of supply to customers in Tema and the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region.
GWL assured the public that regular updates will be provided through its official communication channels and that customers will be notified immediately normal water supply is fully restored.
