The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB) has begun investigations into the aircraft incident involving the KLM Aircraft that occurred on Friday September 3, 2021 at the Kotoka International Airport.

The investigation is in line with Section 17(b) of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Act 2020, Act 1028, which empowers the AIB Commissioner to institute investigations into aircraft accidents and incidents that occur in Ghana.

“In order to ensure an effective management of the process through the Commissioner, Air Cdre (Rtd) Kwame Mamphey has been appointed as the Investigator-in-Charge (IIC)”, a signed statement from the bureau stated.

Acting Commissioner of the AIB, Akwasi Prempeh, noted that the focus of the investigation is to identify the major causes as well as contributing factors to the incident and make recommendations.

It is recalled that a KLM flight, with registration mark PH-BVK, from Accra to Amsterdam was cancelled after a bird crashed into the windshield of the plane.

“The pilot was compelled to apply the emergency brakes when a bird hit the windshield of the airplane. This action caused two tyres to burst while two other tyres got worn out immediately”, PRO of AIB, Madam Madeline Nsaidoo told host of the Anopa BↃfo morning show, Kwamena Sam-Biney on Monday, September 6, 2021.

Madam Nsaidoo stated that there were no casualties or injuries however, all passengers were made to disembark and checked into hotels while their flight was rescheduled.

“By International practice, the AIB assembled all relevant data before the aircraft was released… Its grant to fly off to Amsterdam will not place any negative effect on the investigation process”, the AIB statement read.

The investigation is expected to be complete within two months.
