Registered public sector nurses and midwives, together with its allied associations, have threatened to go on strike over poor conditions of service come Monday, September 21, 2020.

In a joint press release, leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA), the Ghana Physicians Assistants Association, and Ghana Association of Registered Anesthetists informed the public and their employer on their decision to withdraw their services starting from Monday.

“All Nurses, Midwives, Physician Assistants (Pas) and Certified Registered anesthetics (CRAs) in ALL public institutions are directed to withdraw their services from 8:00 am on Monday, 21st September, 2020”, the statement directed.

According to leadership of the various associations, they have engaged their employer in a series of negotiations over the state of their conditions of service however, the employer is not committed to addressing their concerns.

The nurses and midwives’ association further noted that the proposal of the employer cannot meet the economic demands and interest of all nurses, midwives, physician assistants and anesthetics.

Arguing further to support their resolve to embark on a strike, the GRNMA also said that all relevant stakeholders have been duly informed of the status of the negotiations and the possible actions of GRNMA and its allied associations via a letter dated September 9, 2020.

In view of their impending strike, the nurses and midwives association has directed persons seeking medical attention to visit private health facilities.
