The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is calling for the government to create space for the treatment of children who are diagnosed with the COVID-19 disease in the region.

This space, Prof Samson Antwi, head of Child Health Directorate of KATH speaking to Kwamena Sam Biney on Angel FM’s Morning Show, Anopa Bofo said is necessary as the few beds in the hospital is gradually getting full.

According to him, the hospital has now been forced to treat children with severe cases of the disease at holding areas adding that they have limited beds for kids.

He bemoaned the upsurge in the disease in the region in recent times explaining that they now have 11 cases with limited beds.

Authorities at the Child Health Directorate of the hospital say all the cases have been recorded in the last 11 days, bringing in its wake, a strain on the limited space at the facility.

“We are not in the position even to bring new cases. I don’t mean Covid; anybody who is sick when you come here, we will just triage you infront [of the hospital] probably in an ambulance that you came in with.

“If there’s something that we need to do for you, we can do to stabilize you and send you back because our wards are full”.

According to him, there are ongoing talks with the Regional Health Directorate to create a treatment center for children with Covid-19.

“We are exploring the possibility of getting a treatment centre for children [with Covid]. We are in talks with the Medical Director. They have actually had discussions with the Regional Health Directorate to see if they can create space for children who are stable; Covid positives who are stable so that we can move some of them there”, he said.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported 616 new covid-19 cases in its latest update. 3,813 cases remain active while the death toll stands at 377.

A total of 62,751cases have been recorded in the country since March 2020, with 58, 561 patients recovering from the disease or getting discharged from health facilities.
