The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has warned citizens to desist from staying under their transmission lines since that can lead to serious injury or death.

This follows the collapse of a communication mast on the 330 KV Aboadze – Kumasi Transmission line resulting in the collapse of two of the company’s towers.

According to the Director of System Operation with GRIDCo, Ing. Mark Baah, residing under or conducting any form of operation – buying and selling under GRIDCo high tensions – can be injurious to both human life and property.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo breakfast show, he said that the voltage that comes to individual homes is only 240 volts but even that can kill.

He emphasized that the transmission lines carry a higher percentage of voltage and can cause more damage than the power supplied to one’s home.

We are thankful the fallen transmission lines didn’t occur in an open space but a forest area, it could have been a severe disaster, he said in Twi.

He added that we are appealing to everybody not to stay under the high tensions because the voltage from the transmission lines are around 330,000 volts and if these were to fall on a human being, the person would be charred.

The Director of System Operation also announced that in view of the collapse of the towers, persons residing in Kumasi should expect load shedding as GRIDCo works to resolve the damage.

He however stated that residents would have power in the day but should expect power outages during peak hours – 6:30 to 9:00.

Ing. Mark Baah hinted that repair works would last for three weeks but that duration may be extended if report indicates that the foundation of the high tension is affected.

Meanwhile, GRIDCo has blamed the widespread power outage that hit several parts of Ghana on Monday on disturbances in its power systems.

GRIDCo, in a statement issued on November 9, stated that “at 19:50GMT on Monday, November 8, 2021, the power system experienced a significant disturbance. All generating units at Aboadze Enclave and Bui tripped resulting in a power outage in sections of Accra, the Western, Middle and Northern parts of the country”
