Transport Operators in the country have agreed to increase transportation fares by 15 per cent beginning Saturday, 26 February 2022.

The decision was taken after the government held discussions with leaders of the various transport unions and operators.

The Driver Unions had pushed for a 30% per cent increment, but the government and transport unions settled on half of the proposed increase.

The increment will affect shared taxis, intra-city popularly known as ‘trotro’ and intercity transport (Long distance)

A statement jointly signed by the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, said the decision was based on the administrative arrangement on public transport fares and the plight of drivers, commuters and the public.

It added that due to the current trends of the international market and its impact on domestic prices, the resolution with stakeholders to review the Transport Fares becomes important “whenever the accumulative net effects is ten percent or more”

The Road Transport Operators therefore asked all Commercial Transport Operators to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals.
