W/R: Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Health Directorate begins Covid-19 vaccination

The Municipal Health Directorate of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Metropolitan Assembly (EKMA) in the Western Region has commenced a Covid-19 vaccination exercise within the metropolis.

The weeklong exercise which began on Thursday, April 21 and would end on Monday, April 25, 2022, forms part of the National Immunization Day (NID) programme.

Persons eligible for the vaccination are children aged 15 years and above, all adults who are not fully vaccinated. Individuals who took the Johnson and Johnson dose more than three months are also eligible for the booster dose.

To ensure a smooth exercise, health workers will visit work places, homes, religious gatherings, schools, market among others.

According to the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Health Directorate, the move is aimed at serving at least 13% of the eligible population representing 18,735 people in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Metropolis with vaccines either first dose, second dose or booster.

Speaking to journalist, the Municipal Health Director of Effia-Kwesimintsim, Joyce K. Bagina, underscored the significance of being vaccinated, to ensure the reduction in the number of recorded cases to enable Ghanaians return to normal social atmosphere that existed before the Covid-19.

She added that although the easing of Covid-19 restrictions was a welcome news
to all and sundry, a deserving attention must be paid against the global pandemic since the disease still exists.

Therefore, Madam Joyce urged all eligible persons who are not fully vaccinated in the area to get themselves involved to be vaccinated.

She also appealed to the Ghanaian populace to adhere to the schedules for Covid-19 vaccination to help achieve and sustain the needed national protection against the virus.

Meanwhile, according to data, about 63,621 persons in the Municipal representing 36.6% using the old population have so far been vaccinated.

Given the account, 36,497 persons representing 57.4% were administered the vaccines during the first dose, whereas 1,471 are those who took the second dose which represents 4% of the fully vaccinated persons.

The data suggests that 56.1 per cent of the eligible persons in the region are yet to receive a first dose of the vaccine, according to the Municipal Health Director of Effia-Kwesimintsim, Joyce K. Bagina
