Terrorism threats: Government launches ‘See something, say something’ campaign

The Ministry of National Security as part of efforts to sensitize the citizenry against the background of possible terror attacks on Ghana, has outlined safety measures to undertake to avert or reduce damage.

In a notice served the public on May 24, 2022 the Ministry urged that people should inform authorities and security agencies upon chancing on suspicious acts likely to be related to terrorism.

It thus defined terrorism as “the use of violence and fear to achieve an ideological aim” adding, “terrorist attacks could take many forms notably, hostage takings, kidnappings, mass shootings, car bombings, and, frequently, suicide bombings”.

“High-risk targets for acts of terrorism include military and civilian government facilities, international airports, large cities and large profile landmarks.”

The Ministry also noted that the terrorists may also target large public gatherings, water and food supplies, utilities, and corporate centers.

To avert or reduce the possible damage, people are advised to report when an individual is acting unusual including “buying or storing large amount of chemicals, fertilizers or gas cylinders for no obvious reasons”.

One may report when an individual is possessing illegal fire arms or improvised or home-made weapons– possibly using household items or showing interest in obtaining them.
