Traders at Berekum Central Market have denied responsibility for the high cost of foodstuffs on the market, blaming the price hikes on the seasonal changes.

On Thursday which was a market day for the Berekum community, Angel News paid a visit to the market where traders defended that the seasonal change within the year has been the cause of the high rise in prices of food items.

According to them, when the season changes and supplies fall, traders would have to import the foodstuffs to meet demand which accounts for the high cost.

“Tomatoes for instance were expensive because the supply was low at first. We could sell four tomatoes for Gh¢5.00 then, but now plenty of tomatoes cost Gh¢1.00 to Gh¢2.00,” a trader explained.

Meanwhile, they have said items such as pepper, garden eggs, and cassava have a high supply this season making their prices quite cheaper while items like plantain and cocoyam remain expensive due to low supply.

They have therefore urged the customers to stop blaming them for inflations.

To them, the customers are not being fair because the buyers do not complain when food items on the markets become cheap over high supply.
