Angry Krobo youths cut down ECG high tension poles to protest continuous outage

Some high-tension wooden electricity poles within the Krobo enclave in the Eastern Region, have been tempered with chainsaw by some unidentified persons in the area.

The incident which is believed to have occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 4, 2022, saw some of the poles cut down at Adelakope, a suburb community of Lower Manya Krobo Municipality along the Tema-Akosombo highway.

The unknown suspects per our checks might have taken the steps in protest against continuous power cuts in the area.

The high tension feeder connects power to some communities such as Akuse junction and Akorley in the Krobo enclave as well as Aseseeso in the Okere district.

“Unidentified persons reportedly around 11:00 pm cut off a high tension Pole with a chainsaw at Adelakope on the Tema, Akosombo high way in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of Eastern region which connects power to communities such as Akuse junction, Akorley, and Aseseeso in the Okere district,” Angel News reporter Opambour Gyaman Simon told Angelonline.com.gh

Meanwhile, the management of the ECG is yet to issue any statement on the matter.

The Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, switched feeders supplying power to Yilo and Manya Krobo municipalities on July 27, 2022, over attacks on its staff and tempering of its transformers by some unscrupulous residents resisting prepaid meter installations.

The situation has led to a national call for the ECG to restore power to the people. Meanwhile, the Energy Ministry, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, and other government officials visited the area within the week to have a dialogue with opinion leaders to pave way for the ECG to return to their post.

A joint statement issued on August 1, 2022, by the Health Directorates of both Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipal expressed worry over the challenges facing healthcare delivery.

They also noted the high cost it is incurring in purchasing fuel to power their generators to enable served the people. They used the medium and pleaded with the management of the power distribution company to solve the problem and restore power due to public health emergencies.

Also, the Yilo Krobos District Education Directorate on Friday, August 5, 2022, in an interview with Somanya-based Rite FM threatened a temporal closure of all second-cycle boarding schools in the Municipality if power is not restored in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC-Ghana on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, advised the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) against discharging its duties in Yilo and Manya Krobo municipalities in the wake of recent tension in the area.

According to the union, they deemed the Krobo enclave, as it stands now, as an ‘unconducive working environment and trouble areas’ due to the alleged threat issued to the staff of the ECG who were installing the prepaid meters.

Therefore, PUWU urged them to vacate what is termed ‘trouble’ Krobo enclave to avoid risking their lives.

Speaking on the Anopa Bofo morning show, Wednesday, August 3, the ECG’s Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Region, Sakyiwaa Mensah said they are ready to resolve the power crisis facing the people on conditions that the safety and security of their staff are assured.
