Momo tax will further burden Ghanaians – Minority Leader
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Minority leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has bemoaned the unattractiveness of doing business in the country due to the trend of the cedi’s depreciation against the dollar.

According to him, due to the weakening of the Ghanaian cedis, the cost of doing business in Ghana is unacceptably high making it difficult for traders to go by their usual day to day activities.

The minority leader made the statement whiles defending the minority’s move against the finance minister, Ken Ofori Atta to be sacked from post for what they termed as mismanagement of the economy.

The Minority justifying its calls for the removal of the finance minister cited the government’s reckless spending in the financial sector clean-up as one of the justifications.

Tuesday marked day one as the Ad hoc Committee set up by Parliament began considering a motion for a vote of censure against the under-pressure minister filed by the Minority over the current economic crisis.

They made seven allegations against the finance minister including conflict of interest, unconstitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund, illegal payment of oil revenues into offshore accounts, deliberate and dishonest misreporting of economic data to Parliament, fiscal recklessness, alarming incompetence and gross mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy.

Speaking on the development on why Mr. Ken Ofori Atta must be kicked out from office the outspoken member of parliament for the people of Tamale South said the dire situation in the country is hard to bear.

“The cost of doing business is unacceptably high for business. The pharmaceutical industry is complaining because it affects their import, and they are made to pay more.”

“The depreciation of the Cedi has affected even Makola women who cannot trade effectively,” he stressed.

According to the Tamale South lawmaker the performance of the finance minister is disappointing and added, that makes him “not fit to be Finance Minister.”
