Commercial tricycle operators in Kumasi have called on the leadership of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to re-consider their decision to suspend their operations in the Central Business District of the Ashanti Regional capital.

The city authorities announced a decision to stop the movement of tricycles within the Central Business District starting from July 25.

They cited gross indiscipline exhibited by tricycle riders on the roads and traffic congestion in the business district as their main reasons for the decisions.

But the aggrieved riders who appeared on the Street Parliament edition of the Angel Morning Show held at Asafo in Kumasi said they were shocked by the decision of the KMA that they are the major cause of traffic congestion in Kumasi.

They told host, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah that it was unfortunate for the Assembly to point fingers at them for causing traffic congestion in the metropolis as they are not the major causes of the congestion.

“We don’t’ cause traffic – it is rather Taxi caps and trotros that cause traffic congestion in the area because all their stations are more or less located in the middle of the road so we don’t fathom why we should be tagged for that offense instead…,” Baba Ahmed Suleman, General Secretary of the Pragya Riders Association said.

He accused the KMA of being politicailly motivated by the decision and insisted that it should be revieved as it would lead to the unemployment.
