Ghana is safe – Akufo-Addo reassures in State of Nation Address

President Akufo-Addo has delivered his message of assurance to the people of Ghana during his State of the Nation address on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 in Parliament.

In his address, he declared that the nation remains safe, secure, and under the control of its government and citizens. Highlighting the prevailing regional challenges posed by terrorism and violent extremism, the President underscored Ghana’s remarkable resilience in the face of mounting threats encroaching from neighboring territories.

“Mr. Speaker, I am glad to be able to report that the entire territory that makes up our nation is safe, secure, and under the control of the government and people of Ghana,” affirmed President Akufo-Addo, setting the tone for his address. He acknowledged the gravity of this statement, recognizing the pervasive threat of terrorism and violent extremism sweeping across West Africa, from the Sahel to coastal regions.

In a region where many neighboring countries have succumbed to the incursions of extremist groups, Ghana stands as a beacon of stability and resilience. President Akufo-Addo attributed this achievement to the concerted efforts of the government and the unwavering dedication of Ghana’s security services. He emphasized that the peace and security enjoyed by Ghanaians were not fortuitous but the result of deliberate policies, meticulous planning, and substantial investments in national security.

The President expounded on the strategic measures taken by the government to fortify Ghana’s security apparatus. Notably, there has been a significant expansion of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, accompanied by enhanced welfare provisions and infrastructural improvements. The continuous retooling and equipping of security forces underscore Ghana’s proactive stance in confronting emerging security threats.

For many Ghanaians, the assurance of safety within their streets, homes, and communities remains paramount. President Akufo-Addo commended the Ghana Police Service for its pivotal role in maintaining law and order. He lauded the tangible improvements in police visibility and infrastructure, exemplified by the impressive transformation of the Police Headquarters in Accra.

“The changing image of the Police is, perhaps, best exemplified by the dramatic facelift they have given to the frontage of the Police Headquarters on the Ring Road in Accra. It is beautiful, and I recommend it to all institutions and, indeed, households,” remarked President Akufo-Addo, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing public trust and confidence in law enforcement.
