The Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA), has called on Parliament and the Government to commit to pragmatic measures, resources, and processes to ensure the implementation of all the required constitutional and institutional reforms in record to align the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 by Parliament.
According to the alliance, the implementation would pave the way for the creation of an enabling environment to address all the systems that tacitly condone gender-based inequalities in Ghana.
Their call comes after the passage of the much-talk-about Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 by Parliament on 30th July 2024.
The bill, which aims to address historical gender imbalances and promote gender equity in both the public and private sectors, was passed on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the fight for gender equality in Ghana.
AWMA in a statement welcomed the passage of the Bill and congratulated Ghana’s Parliament the Gender Ministry and the Affirmative Action Coalition as well as other groups and individuals who worked assiduously to achieve this feat.
“While congratulating all and sundry, the Alliance for Women in Media Africa, (AWMA) would like to call on Parliament and Government to commit to pragmatic measures, resources and processes to ensure implementation of all the required constitutional and institutional reforms in record, for the creation of an enabling environment to address all the systems that tacitly condone gender-based inequalities.
This would address the unequal gender relations, discriminatory norms and practices which disadvantage women, and work towards redistributing power, resources, and services more equally,” It said further.
Signed by Mercy Catherine Adjabeng, Convenor for Alliance for Women in Media Africa the statement also underscores the significance of the Bill if assented into Law by President Akufo-Addo.
“With the passage of this law, there is greater opportunity to correct the existing gender inequalities by ensuring a progressive increase in women’s participation and representation in leadership, governance and decision-making spaces across all sectors in the country.”
AWMA noted also that they are committed to availing its professional expertise and support to the noble cause to ensure that the crucial need for women’s representation to ensure that their voices are heard and their issues fairly recognized, is addressed.
“AWMA is convinced that it’s about time the Ghanaian women’s expertise and experience come to broaden perspectives, increase creativity, innovation, and more importantly, diversify the pool of talents and competencies available to the nation,” Part of the statement emphasised.
