The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) is calling on all political parties in Ghana to prioritize the introduction and implementation of policies that will accelerate development within our Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
As the country approaches another election cycle, NALAG believes that it is crucial for political parties to consider “policies that will empower local governance structures and enhance the delivery of essential services at the grassroots level.”
“One of the key areas that require urgent attention is the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). NALAG strongly advocates the election of MMDCEs by the people, rather than appointment,” NALAG General Secretary, Kokro Amankwah noted in a release issued Monday, October 14, 2024.
The release maintained: “This democratic approach will not only enhance accountability but will also ensure that these leaders are directly answerable to the electorate, leading to more responsive and effective local governance.”
In addition, NALAG commends the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his policy on introduction of an Electoral Area Share of the Common Fund (EASCF).
“This initiative will ensure that resources are equitably distributed to all electoral areas, empowering Assembly Members to effectively address the unique needs of their communities.
“By allocating specific funds directly to electoral areas, development projects can be tailored to local priorities, resulting in more impactful and sustainable outcomes,” it indicated while referencing similar initiative instituted by the MP for Akyem Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah.
“A good case is the Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah who disbursed his MP’s Common Fund to all 18 electoral areas within his constituency, which has accelerated development in these electoral areas.”
Furthermore, NALAG underscores the need for the timely release of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
It notes “Delays in the disbursement of these funds hinder the ability of MMDAs to carry out essential developmental projects.”
“To this end, NALAG urges the government to ensure that the DACF is released promptly and in full, enabling assemblies to plan and execute projects that will significantly improve the lives of the people.
“As the representative of all 261 local authorities across the country, NALAG stands ready to collaborate with all political parties, stakeholders, and the government to ensure that these policies are not only introduced but also effectively implemented.
“It is through such collaborative efforts that we can strengthen our local governance systems, promote transparency, and accelerate development in our districts and electoral areas.

It called on “all political parties to heed this call and include these proposals in their manifestos as we work together to build a better Ghana for all.”
