Greater Accra minister leads maiden sanitation day observation

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, on Friday, February 28, 2025, joined the observation of the maiden ‘Regional Sanitation Day’ in the region, a reinstated initiative aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and hygiene across the region.

Dubbed “Regional Sanitation Day” the clean-up exercise was held in the early hours of Friday when all shops and businesses along the Central Business District (CBD) were closed temporarily as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) rolled out the maiden edition of the initiative.

The initiative, reintroduced by the minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda for reviving the National Sanitation Day, aims to improve sanitation in the metropolis, ahead of the March 6th Independence Day celebrations.

The minister and his entourage joined the exercise at Madina that brought together distinguished guests, hard-working market men and women, traditional leaders, Waste management service providers, and various stakeholders committed to enhancing sanitation standards in the region.

Speaking to the media, Madam Obenewaa Ocloo emphasized the pressing sanitation challenges facing the region and the urgent need to address them to improve public health, protect the environment, and enhance overall well-being.

She noted that the initiative aligns with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda for the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day.

The sanitation exercise was observed simultaneously across all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.

She stressed that “This is a collective effort, and I therefore call on all assemblies, traditional leaders, religious organizations, market associations, youth groups, and the private sector to fully support and participate in this noble cause.”

Oh her part, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Jospong Group of Companies, Sophia Kudjordji, also called on Ghanaians to actively participate in cleaning their environment.

She emphasized that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is a shared responsibility and urged individuals, businesses, and communities to contribute to the national effort to improve sanitation.
