The lack of classroom blocks for Somanya Technical and Vocational Institute in Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region, has forced students to study under trees.

The school, which gained its Technical and Vocational status in 2020 after transitioning from a Social Welfare School for persons with disabilities, is now grappling with infrastructural deficiencies.

Somanya Technical and Vocational Institute finds itself in such a situation as it has seen no transformation and improvement in conditions since it transitioned into a Technical and Vocational Institution in 2020. They cannot boast of a single classroom block ever since.

The situation has left learners with no other option than to endure severe infrastructure challenges, including sitting on the floor to study due to the unavailability of furniture as well as studying under trees due to a lack of classrooms.

Currently, the school has 846 students, with 508 in the boarding house and 338 in the hostels.

Somanya-based Rite FM’s Morning Show host, Austin Ofori Addo reported that “The absence of proper classrooms forces students to take lessons under trees, and the lack of desks means parents must purchase plastic chairs for their children, who are left to balance their books on their laps while studying.”

He indicated that the situation worsens as students are compelled to sit on the floor due to the unavailability of furniture.

According to reports, the school is supposed to house 120 boarders (both male and female) however the boarding house is currently accommodating 508, leading to congestion, and making students vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

“No dining hall for the school, no beds for boarders and among other challenges,” the journalists accounted.

The detailing report claimed that there is no structured supervision for students in the school’s hostels breeding an increase in social vices among students.

All efforts to reach out to the management of the school to comment on the matter proved futile as they declined to address the situation.
