The proposal by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markins demanding a dedicated health facility to address the health concerns of Parliamentarias, is a misplaced priority says the Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana.

The association emphasizes that it was “unconscionable” for Members of Parliaments (MPs) to consider their personal interests over those of the ordinary Ghanaian.

The Association in a statement signed by its President, Farmer General Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu said that although it acknowledges the need for improved working conditions for MPs, the plight of those who voted them into power is equally important.

“It is unconscionable that our leaders would consider building a hospital exclusively for MPs when cocoa farmers, who are the backbone of our economy, lack access to basic healthcare facilities.

“These farmers, who toil tirelessly to feed our nation, often queue to vote for our leaders, yet they are denied the most fundamental necessities, including anti-venom and rabies vaccines.

Meanwhile, pregnant women in our communities are forced to sleep on floors during labor, highlighting the stark contrast between the lives of our leaders and those they represent.”

Nonetheless, the association suggested that Ghanaian lawmakers reconsider their priorities and be democratic in representing their various constituencies.

“We urge our leaders to reexamine their priorities and consider the plight of the average Ghanaian. It is time for our lawmakers to demonstrate a genuine commitment to serving the people who elected them.”

They pledged to continue advocating for the rights and interests of its members and all those who feel marginalized by the selfish interests of leaders.
