Concerned citizens of Akyem Asiakwa in the Abuakwa South Municipality have staged a protest against illegal miners for destroying their water bodies and forest reserves.

According to the leader of the concerned citizens, Tweneboah Kodua, the situation has become increasingly difficult, with residents now reliant on sachet water due to the pollution of their water sources.

He emphasised that the galamsey menace has not only compromised access to clean water but has also harmed agricultural lands, undermining the livelihoods of local farmers.

Mr. Kodua urged the government and relevant stakeholders to intervene and provide a lasting solution to the water crisis and environmental degradation.

“We’re pleading with our chief here that he must try and stop those doing mining in our rivers, particularly in our forest reserve.

“There’s something called dig and wash; they’re not helping us get clean water to drink. Now when we’re going to farm, we buy sachets of water.

“And also, with the galamsey, when we ask some people to stop it, they’ll tell you their government is in power, so when we go to the police station, nothing good will come of it,” Mr. Kodua stated.
