The Minority Caucus in Parliament has justified its backlash and calls for the suspension of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, following his involvement in the much-talked-about dollar gift to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.
According to the Minority, Mr. Gyamfi, at the center of the controversy, has, over the years, been a critic of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) successive governments over wrongdoing; therefore, it is disturbing to see someone who preaches accountability act contrary to those values.
They described this as “shameful,” noting that a populist crusader is now caught in actions that betray the very values he preached, such as economic discipline, cedi loyalty, and anti-corruption.
“It is even more shameful that this act was committed by someone who has in the past championed populist rhetoric about economic discipline, cedi loyalty, and anti-corruption,” Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Dr. Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama said on behalf of the Minority at a press conference.
The Minority added that Mr. Gyamfi’s display of financial recklessness is not only a betrayal of public trust but a slap in the face of millions of Ghanaians currently grappling with the devastating effects of cedi depreciation and the unbearable cost of living.
“We the Minority are calling for the immediate sanctioning of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi as Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, and a full-scale investigation into the source of the dollar bundle displayed in the viral video,” the Minority added.
The Minority emphasized that if the President seeks to run a corruption-free government as preached, Mr. Gyamfi must be made an example.
“Just recently, about a week ago, the President clearly told the good people of Ghana that if you violate his Code of Conduct, you are going to face a sanction.
“So, by now, we should have seen a letter being issued dismissing or suspending Mr. Sammy Gyamfi pending further investigations. This is only the right thing to do.”
