The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, harshly criticized both the timing and content of the bill passed by Parliament to impose Gh¢1 on fuel products.

The former Deputy Health Minister described it as an “evil” decision carried out under the cover of darkness.

He re-affirmed the Minority Caucus’ commitment to reject what they consider an unfair and secretive legislative process in the August House.

Mr. Acquah’s comments follow the government’s decision to introduce a Gh¢1 tax on fuel in a midnight parliamentary session. The session saw the Minority stage a walkout, leaving only the Majority side to push the bill through.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) with host Saddick Adams on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Mr. Acquah expressed his outrage.

“You have a government whose Finance Minister told the vetting committee that they did not need any new taxation to boost revenue or revive the economy. Yet, at midnight, while men were at asleep, these same people [the NDC] passed a bill to introduce a new tax.

“I thank God that the Minority exempted itself from this. We won’t be part of this evil. An evil that will burden and ultimately harm Ghanaians,” he stated.

The Akyem Oda MP also condemned government officials defending the tax, especially while they deny the reality of intermittent power outages, yet choose to impose new financial burdens on citizens living in those very conditions.

“Let me tell you, that’s how a propaganda-driven, settings and corrupt government goes about doing things,” he fired.
