UTAG, TUTAG threaten strike over delayed research allowance

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have jointly issued a strong warning to the government over the undue delay in releasing the exchange rate and payment for the 2025 Book and Research (BRA) Allowance.

In a joint press statement dated June 9, 2025, the three unions expressed deep frustration and discontent, noting that the delay has caused significant uncertainty and frustration among their members who rely on the allowance to support their academic and research work.

Following a meeting held on June 8, 2025, the unions unanimously resolved that government must, as a matter of urgency, release the official exchange rate and commence payment immediately.

They emphasized that while the rates have been delayed, they will not tolerate any extension of payment beyond September 2025.

“The allowance is a statutory entitlement under our Conditions of Service,” the statement read, stressing its critical importance for research, academic growth, and knowledge sharing.

The unions have issued a stern ultimatum, indicating that if the government fails to begin the payment process by June 13, 2025, they will interpret it as a formal strike notice and begin industrial action across all campuses.

UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG have therefore urged the government to act swiftly to avoid disruptions to the academic calendar and to prioritize the welfare of educators and the broader academic community.
