A Communications team member for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Kwarteng, has strongly criticised the government on the suspension of the fuel levy which he said came without clear explanation or justification.
According to him, the decision raises major concerns about the government’s machinery and its reasoning.
Speaking on Angel Morning Show (AMS) Monday, June 16, 2025, with Saddick Obama, Mr. Kwarteng said the suspension of the energy levy clearly shows the incompetence of the John Dramani Mahama lead administration.
“This lack of transparency raises more questions than answers. What was the reason behind the suspension? Is it purely political?” he asked.
Citing what he described a double standard of the government, Mr Kwarteng recalled a pronouncement made by the finance minister on taxation.
“During the vetting of the finance minister he made it clear to the committee that he has understudied the economy for over two (2) decades and you don’t need new taxes to run the economy. So where from this energy levy charges,” Mr. Kwarteng said quoting the finance minister.
Mr. Kwarteng argued that the government U-turn suspension decision was nothing but to please the public.
“The suspension is a populist move aimed at appeasing voters rather than addressing the underlying issues. How can you cancel E- levy which earns the country little over Gh¢2 billion annually that you claim it burdens the citizens and impose over Gh¢5 billion on Ghanaians in this hardship economy,” he added.
He stressed “I want to put it on record that this is a short-sighted decision that prioritizes politics over people’s long-term interests. We need policies that balance economic realities with social welfare.”
He, however stated “we need a total cancellation but not suspension.”
As the government navigates this complex issue, the NPP communicator said it was crucial to engage in open dialogue with stakeholders and other authorities in charge to provide clear explanations for its decision.
He urged Ghanaians to remain resolute and steadfast as they hold the government responsible for total cancellation.
