Drivers urged to ensure roadworthiness of vehicles to reduce crashes

Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has advised commercial vehicle drivers to thoroughly inspect their vehicles before hitting the road.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng emphasized, the importance of ensuring that all aspects of vehicle are in good working condition to prevent accidents.

Speaking on Angel Morning Show (AMS), he highlighted the growing concerns over the increasing number of road accidents involving commercial vehicles.

According to statistics, over 6,000 accidents have been recorded from January – June, 2025 involving 10,378 vehicles.

Many of these accidents, he stated can be can attributed to vehicle-related issues.

“It’s crucial for commercial vehicle drivers to take responsibility for their vehicles’ maintenance. A well-maintained vehicle is not only safer but also more efficient and reliable,” Chief Supt. Alexander Obeng told Saddick Addams on Friday, June 20, 2025.

He appealed to commercial drivers who are operating without a valid license, to stay off the road until they undergo proper training and aquire the right license category.

“Driving without a license is a serious offense that put lives at risk. We urge all drivers to ensure they have a valid license before getting behind the wheel,” Chief Supt. Obeng reiterated.

“If you witness a driver who is driving carelessly, report them immediately to police authority.”

Chief Supt. Obeng said as they take proactive steps to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, commercial vehicle drivers can significantly help reduce the risk of accidents and contribute to a safer transportation.

“Regular vehicle inspections and maintenance can help prevent accidents and save lives,” he added.
