The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a significant policy initiative aimed at facilitating the donation of medical equipment to the health ministry by removing import duties.
This move is designed to bolster the country’s healthcare system.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, he stated that the ministry is also prepared to dispatch personnel to assess equipment donations from abroad, particularly those in large quantities, ensuring that they meet the nation’s healthcare needs and are in suitable condition before acceptance.
“The policy direction from today is that we have created a desk at the ministry, so if you have any equipment, any donation whatsoever that you are going to give us free of charge to contribute to the healthcare needs of the country, you’ll come to that desk or you call that desk.
“Then we take you through the process; you’ll consign the consignment through the ministry.
“Once it gets here, we will then expedite the waiver so that you won’t be asked to pay any duty on the items you’re going to donate.
“And so the ministry stands ready. If there’s a need, and it even requires that people from the ministry must travel outside the country to assess the equipment, especially when they are in large quantities, we will send personnel to evaluate whether we need those items or if they are in good condition.
“We will then send out people to travel outside the country to assess the conditions of these equipment or consumables before they are brought into the country,” he assured.
