President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to constructing a bridge over the River Oti.
Describing it as a critical intervention, President Mahama said it will improve connectivity between the northern and southern parts of the country and drive economic growth in the Oti Region.
Addressing residents and traditional leaders at Dambai during his Thank You tour on Friday, July 25, 2025, the President said the project forms part of a broader national infrastructure agenda aimed at opening up key economic corridors and supporting local livelihoods.
The Oti Region, he explained, holds a strategic position in Ghana’s food distribution chain and deserves targeted investment to unleash its full potential.
“Modern infrastructure is the backbone of national development. Oti Region, a key transit zone for food and goods from the north to the south, deserves focused investment,” President Mahama said.
He emphasized that work on the bridge is progressing steadily, with engineering designs almost complete and procurement processes underway.
“I have not forgotten my promise to construct a bridge over the Oti River. This bridge will dramatically reduce travel time from southern Ghana to the north and unlock new economic opportunities for our people,” he added.
The bridge project is part of a set of road interventions under the government’s Strategic National Infrastructure Programme.
President Mahama assured the people that several roads across the Oti Region have been targeted for construction or rehabilitation in the coming months.
Key Roads Set for Construction and Upgrade
He announced that the following projects are already in the procurement phase:
• Construction of the Dambai Bridge
• Upgrading of the Okadjakrom–Kwamikrom Road
• Upgrading of the Abotoase–Atonkor Road
• Upgrading of the Kpasa–Tinjase Road
• Rehabilitation of the Hohoe–Jasikan Road
• Upgrading of the Nkwanta–Oti Damanko Road
• Rehabilitation of the Hohoe–Baika–Jasikan Road
Mahama added that the Nkwanta–Kpassa–Oti Damanko stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road will not face any delays, promising accelerated work to ensure completion.
He also revealed that technical costing has begun for the next phase of roads, including Nkwanta–Dambai and major routes within Kete Krachi, Krachi Nchumuru, and the Guan districts.
“Let me also emphasize that all constituencies in the Oti Region have been included in our national road upgrade programme, which covers over 160 constituencies across the country,” the President noted.
Water Transport Plans
In addition to road development, the President touched on efforts to introduce inland water transport systems that would serve communities along rivers and lakes in the region.
“We are also exploring the potential of inland water transport systems to connect lake communities and facilitate trade and mobility across the region,” he said.
President Mahama’s visit to the Oti Region forms part of his thank-you tour and national engagement efforts, aimed at sharing progress on his administration’s priorities and listening to the concerns of the people.
