President of Kenya, William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto, has stated that the Kenyan government has successfully restructured the country’s educational system, lifting it out of a state of distress.
Speaking at the Jamhuri Day Celebration on Friday, December 12, 2025, he mentioned some of the policies the government implemented to improve the country’s education system.
President William Ruto noted that, as part of Kenya’s efforts to reform its educational system, the government has employed 76,000 teachers to ease the workload on existing staff, with an additional 100,000 to be hired soon.
“Teachers were overwhelmed, but today, we have hired 76,000 teachers and by next month, a total of 100,000 teachers—the largest recruitment of teachers in Kenya’s history,” he revealed.
He disclosed that the government has set up 23,000 new classrooms to tackle student overcrowding, and 1,600 laboratories are being built nationwide.
“Three years ago, education was in distress, classrooms were overcrowded. We have built 23,000 new classrooms, and 1,600 laboratories are under construction across the nation,” President William Ruto added.
President William Ruto added that the government has implemented the Student-Centered Funding Model, which provides scholarships and loans to students to ensure equal opportunities for pursuing their academic ambitions.
He also stated that about 5,000 students have benefited from the funding model, enabling them to select courses that align with their aptitude and lifting the financial burden on families.
“Nearly 5,000 students have already benefited from this funding model. This reform has lifted the financial burden from families and enabled students to choose courses that align with their talents, aspirations, and the needs of our nation,” President William Ruto said.
