Driver and mate arrested over unlawful firearm possession

The Oti Regional Police Command has arrested a driver and his mate for possessing a firearm and ammunition without lawful authority.

The suspects have been identified as 35-year-old Abubakari Salam Atta (Driver) and his associate, 19-year-old Kabuja Kwadwo Tademe.

The police confirmed this in an official statement dated February 9, 2026.

According to the statement, the Intelligence Department of the Oti Regional Police Command intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS-4677-17 during an operation on February 8.

The vehicle, which was transporting building materials from Accra to Kpandai in the Northern Region, was found to contain one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun and twenty-one boxes of ammunition.

Police added that the boxes contained a total of 525 rounds of Lion AAA and BB cartridges concealed among the building materials.

The suspects claimed ownership of the items and were arrested on the spot.

Police say the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned before the court.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the weapons, the statement said.

The Police assured the public of its continued commitment to removing illegal weapons from communities and enhancing public safety.
