Mantrac Ghana’s rebuild centre showcased as model for mining efficiency

The Mohammed L. Mansour Component Rebuild Centre of Mantrac Ghana at Biakakrom in Ahanta West, Western Region, has been highlighted as a model facility for improving efficiency and sustainability in Ghana’s mining and industrial sectors.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, led a delegation of government officials and stakeholders to tour the facility and called for stronger collaboration between Mantrac and small-scale miners.

He stressed the need for the high technical and operational standards demonstrated at the centre to be replicated within the small-scale mining sector to improve safety, productivity and environmental compliance.

“I think that’s the collaboration we are going to have. How do we make sure the very high standards we’ve seen here are replicated in small-scale mining?” he stated.

The Minister noted that the visit had demonstrated the critical role Mantrac plays in supporting Ghana’s key economic sectors, particularly mining, construction and energy, through equipment servicing, maintenance and advanced technical support.

At the centre, Mantrac officials explained that the Component Rebuild Centre specialises in restoring worn-out machinery to “like-new” condition at significantly reduced cost compared with full equipment replacement.

This process allows machines to undergo multiple operational life cycles, improving efficiency and reducing capital expenditure for clients.

According to the National Product Support Sales manager at Mantrac, Anthony Benjamin-Eghan, some equipment in Ghana has operated for over 120,000 hours due to repeated rebuilds, demonstrating the durability and reliability of the system.

He added that the facility, valued at over 770 million cedis, is fully operated by Ghanaian professionals and employs more than 200 workers, many of whom come from surrounding communities.

He further emphasised the company’s commitment to skills development, noting that Mantrac runs structured technical training programmes lasting between six months and two years, in addition to customer-focused training sessions at its Takoradi centre.

He also assured that the company strictly monitors equipment usage to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to prevent involvement in illegal mining activities.

“We monitor and track our machines to ensure they operate within approved concessions and in line with environmental standards,” he explained.

He added that Mantrac is ready to support government efforts by extending technical training opportunities to small-scale miners.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Kenneth Ashigbey, described the facility as a game-changer for Ghana’s mining and industrial development.

He praised the innovation and value addition taking place at the centre, noting that it helps Ghana retain foreign exchange that would otherwise be spent on importing machinery components.

He also highlighted the use of predictive maintenance technology, which allows engineers to detect potential faults before they occur and resolve them in advance, thereby ensuring continuous industrial operations and reducing downtime in mining activities.

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, also commended Mantrac for its contribution to the regional and national economy. He said the tour had broadened his understanding of the company’s operations beyond being a mere supplier of heavy equipment.

According to him, the Component Rebuild Centre not only serves local clients but also international markets, creating skilled employment opportunities for Ghanaians and boosting economic activity in the Ahanta West District.

He further praised Mantrac for maintaining its presence in the Western Region.

Mantrac Ghana, the sole authorised dealer of Caterpillar Inc. equipment in Ghana, continues to provide services including equipment sales, maintenance, component rebuilds and technical training across multiple sectors such as mining, construction, power generation, marine and transport.
