President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct about 2,000 kilometres of roads across the country under the government’s proposed “Big Push” infrastructure programme, describing it as one of the most ambitious road development drives in Ghana’s history.
Mr Mahama made the announcement during his Resetting Tour in Bimbila in the Northern Region on Saturday, April 18, 2026, where he assured traditional authorities and residents that the Nanung area and surrounding communities will benefit significantly from the planned nationwide road expansion.
According to him, the programme is designed to accelerate infrastructure development simultaneously across all regions, rather than implementing projects in phases.
“The budget has allocated almost 50 billion cedis to finance the construction of almost 2,000 kilometres of road at the same time, not in stages, at the same time all over the country,” he said.
Mr Mahama indicated that the initiative will ensure equitable distribution of road projects, stressing that every part of the country will receive its fair share of development.
“Every part of the country, every region is getting its fair share of the roads,” he stated.
He further disclosed that road contracts awarded within the 2025 and 2026 period represent what he described as the largest number of road contracts in Ghana since independence.
“Since last year 2025 and 2026, we have awarded the largest number of road contracts in the history of Ghana since independence,” Mr Mahama said.
Touching on specific projects for the eastern corridor and the Northern Region, Mr Mahama said the Bangdili to Chachagli bridge will be prioritised to improve access between Zabzugu and Bimbila.
“I can assure you that the Bangdili to Chachagli bridge is one that we’re going to prioritize because it will make access between Zabzugu and Bimbila much quicker and much shorter,” he noted.
He also announced that the Bimbila–Salaga road will be undertaken under the Big Push programme to open up the corridor for improved trade and transportation.
“We’re also going to do under the Big Push the Bimbila–Salaga road so that we can open that corridor too,” he said.
Mr Mahama added that government also plans to work on the Kandai to Salaga road to improve connectivity in the area and facilitate movement of goods and people.
“We’re also going to do the Kandai to Salaga road to make it easier,” he stated.
He further revealed that preparations are underway for the commencement of work on the Chereponi–Bunkpurugu road as part of the infrastructure package being rolled out for the eastern corridor.
“We’re also going to cut sod for Chereponi–Bunkpurugu road,” he said.
Mr Mahama maintained that the Big Push programme will serve as a major economic driver, improving transportation networks, reducing travel time, and boosting commercial activity across the country.
He assured residents that the concerns raised by traditional authorities regarding development needs in the area have been noted and will be considered in the implementation of the broader national infrastructure plan.
“All the other requests you made, I’ve taken note of them and we’ll discuss with the education ministry, the health ministry and all the ministries that are involved in order that we can sort out some of the issues that you asked for,” he added.
