The Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has seized more than 100 unlicensed motorbikes being used for courier services in Accra.
Speaking to the media, the Commission’s Public Relations Manager, Nii Yeboah Burgesson, said the Commission was not looking to penalise owners or riders, but to enforce the law and encourage compliance, starting with registering the motorbikes before using them.
“Roughly more than 100 motorbikes have been impounded. We are working in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service. Although the Commission’s work is through the authorities, the intercept and impound of motorbikes is vested with the police service, so they work with us to impound motorbikes.
“We are not here to penalise anyone. We are just here to enforce the law,” he stated.
Mr Burgesson advised motorbike owners not to wait until they are impounded before paying a penalty of GHC 600 and starting the registration process.
He said owners should also be prepared to pay an additional GHC 570, noting that the main cost of registration is GHC 570, while the penalty for being caught is GHC 600.
He urged owners to take advantage by completing the registration online without visiting any office by dialling *928*007# on all networks.
“The fine is GHC 600 but registering is GHC 570 so why wouldn’t I do that and have the freedom to work the whole year but wait for such an exercise before I get impounded, waste my time, pay a penalty then I start the process all over again.
“The system that is live *928*007# go on there and then do it, so this is an opportunity for you to go on the platform and then commence your registration process,” he uttered.
