President John Dramani Mahama has announced that travellers using the Accra International Airport will no longer be required to remove their shoes and belts during security checks from August this year.
According to the President, government is installing new security equipment at the airport to improve passenger experience and reduce inconveniences associated with travel procedures.
Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s electronic visa (e-Visa) system on Monday, May 25, President Mahama disclosed that new 3D scanners are currently being installed at Terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport.
He explained that the scanners will also eliminate the need for passengers to remove laptops and liquids from their hand luggage during screening.
“New 3D scanners are being installed in both Terminal 3 and Terminal 2. These scanners will eliminate the need to remove laptops and liquids from your hand baggage when you travel,” he said.
The President further revealed that additional security equipment expected to arrive in August will end the practice of travellers removing their shoes and belts at airport checkpoints.
“Also, in August, we are receiving and installing new equipment that will spare travellers using our airport the inconvenience of having to remove their shoes and their belts. I can see that was a very unpleasant experience most travellers go through,” he stated.
“After installation in August, you will not be required to remove your shoes and your belts anymore,” President Mahama added.
He said the interventions form part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s aviation and border management systems while improving efficiency and convenience for travellers at the country’s main international airport.
