Onion farmers from Kwahu Kotoso, Pitiku in the Eastern Region have called on the government to streamline the importation process of onions, citing concerns over market competition and the sustainability of local agriculture.
Speaking on Angel TV’s Nyansapo, Friday, September 5, 2025, with host, Ohemaa Sakyiwaa, a farmer – Peter Abanga expressed their frustrations regarding the current importation procedures, which they believe are detrimental to local producers.
However, he argue that the imported onions, often at lower prices, has created an uneven competition of market.
“We are struggling to compete with imported onions that overtake the market, often undermining our prices,” he stressed.
He made a reference that even in Nigeria the government supports the farmers unlike Ghana, farmers cannot even farm on a large scale due to lack of finance.
“We can’t even buy agro-chemicals, cost of transportation to the farms have become headache on us. Due to these challenges, many consumers are opting for imported onions, which are often cheaper.
“We understand that consumers are looking for the best prices, but we urge them to consider the benefits of supporting local farmers,” Mr. Abanga stated.
He was hopeful that the government will consider their appeal and initiate a collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and consumers to revitalize the local onion industry.
“By working together, we can ensure that our farmers thrive and that consumers have access to fresh, locally produced onions,” he expressed.
