The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has called on citizens to support local consumption and processing of cocoa, with the aim of boosting the economy and promoting national pride.
At the launch of the National Chocolate Month, the deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in charge of Marketing and Special Duties at the GTA, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, emphasized the importance of cocoa in Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings, rural employment, and national development.

However, he noted that over 90% of Ghana’s cocoa production is exported, while less than 10% is consumed locally.
“It is worth noting that over 90% of our cocoa production is exported while the less 10% is consumed locally in the form of finished and semi-finised cocoa base products.

“This reality present both a challenge and an opportunity – A challenge in a sense that because we export much of the cocoa value and the opportunity because there’s an immense potential to grow local consumption, processing and appreciating of cocoa here at home in Ghana.

“And this is why it’s imperative to encourage Ghanaians to cconsume more of cocoa base products,” he mentioned on Wednesday, February 11, 2025 at Accra.

Abeiku Santana encouraged Ghanaians to choose local cocoa products, citing the health benefits of cocoa and its role in supporting farmers and processors.
“Beyond the national pride, cocoa offers health benefits, it is rich in antioxidants and supports our heart health.

“It improves blood circulation and enhances our brain function and also contributes to the emotional wellbeing so cocoa is not just a commodity – It’s a nourishment to our wellness, our joy in purest form,” he highlighted.
He commended the CEO of the GTA, Maame Efua Huadjeto, for her initiatives to promote cocoa appreciation, particularly among school-going children.
