The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo‑Markin, has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) treated the 24‑hour economy more as a campaign slogan than as a genuine policy.
In an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, he suggested that if the initiative aimed to create jobs, the NDC should have focused on the private sector rather than on government institutions.
“I saw the bill, they brought a bill and passed it that they were creating a 24, hour economy authority, another bureaucracy. You don’t need a bill,” he asserted.
He emphasised that, to create jobs, the focus should have been on the private sector, not on government institutions.
“You have the Ministry of Trade, you want to give an opening to the private sector, what they should have done was to continue with the Akuffo Addo 1D1F,” he said.
He further noted that relaxing import taxes for the private sector attracts companies to Ghana, reduces costs for raw materials and machinery, leads to cheaper products, job creation and expansion.
“I think they could have looked at the 1D1F, review it areas that they thought were the weaknesses in the policy and continue rolling out,” he concluded.
