Ghanaian highlife musician, songwriter, and producer Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Kwame Marfo, is widely known for his ability to create hit songs.
Apart from singing, he is also a talented producer who has released several bangers such as Angela, Confusion, Wish Me Well, Ohemaa, and Wa Ye Wie, especially between 2017 and 2018.
Kuami Eugene featured Obaapa Christy on the song Wa Ye Wie.
As a songwriter and producer, he has also written and produced songs for several gospel musicians. For example, he produced Nyame Ye for Piesie Esther under the record label Lynx Entertainment. He also produced Victory by Joyce Blessing, Watch Me by Empress Gifty, Come See My Mother by MzVee, No Dulling by Keche, and Me Ni Waa by Becca.
Apart from producing for other artists, he also creates his own beats and writes his own songs.
From 2017 to 2020, Kuami Eugene released many songs, including his album Son of Africa, which featured tracks like Beifour, Ewurade, Open Gate, Amen, Wa Ye Wie, Marry Me, Dance Hard, Will You, and Give It To Me. During this period, he was signed to Lynx Entertainment, where he spent eight years.
After his contract with Lynx Entertainment ended, he started his own record label called Rock Star Label.
Kuami Eugene is loved by many fans, and I personally admire him for his music as well.
Among his songs, Beifour and Ewurade remain my favourites. In Beifour, part of the lyrics states:
“They want to end me before my time ooh. Efie Nipa twe wo san a how you go shine oo, ɔsɛe wo aku wo asopa wo a, wo wu a ɔse oh, she was close to her prime ooh.”
This statement reflects how some people may try to destroy someone before their time of success. It also conveys the idea that if family members hold you back, it becomes difficult to shine. Sadly, sometimes people only acknowledge your potential after you are gone, saying you were close to your prime.
In Ewurade, another line says:
“Ɔbra Akwantuo yi wae, wo nni boafoɔ a wo ho yɛ mmɔbɔ wae,”
which means that the journey of life can be difficult, and without support you may feel lonely and sad. I strongly agree with this message because in certain situations, when you lack support, it can make you feel like your life is falling apart.
Personally, I feel that Kuami Eugene’s style of music has changed over time. In the past, he used to sing and produce many inspiring and meaningful songs like the ones mentioned earlier.
However, his newer Afrobeat song Scatter feels different from the type of music I used to associate with him.
In my opinion, Kuami Eugene was at his best during his early stages in the music industry. His earlier songs connected deeply with me, but his current musical direction does not give me the same feeling as before.
