Chairman of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Patrick Boamah, has called on the government to reduce the Growth and Sustainability Levy to cushion firms and maintain investor confidence in the mining sector.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, he stated that the government has not been transparent with the mining community, and the lack of honesty is why the industry commissioned its own report.
“So it tells you that government has not been honest with the mining community, and it is the reason why they have commissioned this report,” he said.
He recalled when the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, was previously invited to a committee meeting and during that session, the Minister promised to reduce the levy to 1% to cushion the industry, but this has not yet happened.
He, however, advised the government to take the mining sector seriously to encourage local Ghanaians.
“I believe that the government has to take the mining sector seriously, especially when the government wants to encourage local Ghanaians to take over some of the major mining assets that will be expiring at the end of the year,” he said.
According to him, mining is a highly capital-intensive sector, and the government needs to implement the right fiscal regime to help companies retain jobs and grow the economy.
He added that reducing the Growth and Sustainability Levy is essential to making mining companies attractive and maintaining investor confidence in the sector.
