Aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has accused President John Mahama of presiding over worsening illegal mining activities in the country, urging him to visit devastated communities to see the destruction firsthand.
He stressed that galamsey has intensified under President Mahama’s leadership, leaving behind severe environmental damage.
Mr. Tonto added that it would have been prudent for the President to travel to areas such as Akwatia, where illegal mining has scarred the land, and Elembelle, where forests have been destroyed.
He further expressed shock that President Mahama has now admitted that members of his own party are involved in galamsey, describing the revelation as a disgrace to the nation.
According to him, the President’s decision to embark on a “thank you tour” will compel him to be confronted with the harsh realities of illegal mining and its impact on communities.
“Galamsey has become a national crisis, demanding urgent leadership and accountability to protect Ghana’s environment and future generations,” he stated, emphasizing that governance must be consistent and responsive throughout the period.
