Germany’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended in shock elimination after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso’s header, but Germany fought back in the second half, equalising through Kai Havertz, who finished off a cross from Florian Wirtz.
The match remained tightly contested through extra time, with Germany briefly believing they had won it when Jonathan Tah scored, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
In the decisive penalty shootout, both sides missed chances, but Germany suffered crucial setbacks as Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade saw their efforts saved, while Jonathan Tah later blazed over in sudden death.
Paraguay eventually sealed the victory through José Canale’s winning penalty and will now face either France or Sweden in the Round of 16.
