President John Dramani Mahama stated that the Black Stars could secure major silverware in future competitions if a formidable team is built, with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz at the helm of affairs.
He believes that the continued support of Ghanaians for the technical team, while building the future of the squad around a core of players who participated in the 2026 Cup, will prove meaningful for the country.
Speaking on the team’s performance at the Mundial, President Mahama indicated that Ghana could develop a stronger national team capable of competing successfully in future AFCON and FIFA World Cup tournaments.
“I’m sure that if we keep this team and persuade the coach to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and next World Cup, we will have a team that can claim the championship in any of those two competitions,” he said at the inspection of the Ho Stadium as part of his tour of the Volta Region.
He pledged that “Government will therefore continue investing not only in sports infrastructure but also in creating an environment that supports the growth and development of Ghanaian sports.”
Mr. Mahama used the occasion to praise the Black Stars for exceeding Ghanaians’ expectations of their capabilities at the tournament, saying they showed resilience and commitment.
“The Black Stars did well; nobody gave them a chance; people predicted they would crash out at the group stage, but they managed to get into the Round of 32,” he noted on Friday, July 17.
