President John Dramani Mahama has presented a support and compensation package to the families of the victims of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, including senior government officials and military officers.
The interventions include statutory compensation, full healthcare coverage, dedicated educational trust funds, and personalised presidential letters to each surviving child of the victims.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Presidency on Thursday, July 20, 2026, President Mahama disclosed that a statutory compensation package of GHS13,872,962.40 has been awarded to the dependants of the civilian officials.
He noted the arrangement was made in accordance with the Workmen’s Compensation Act and endorsed by the Accra Circuit Court.
Similarly, the families of the Ghana Air Force personnel who died in the line of duty have been compensated in full alignment with the Armed Forces Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1546).
“I am pleased to announce today that these interventions have now been fully implemented for the families of our fallen civilian officials,” President Mahama stated.
To guarantee the future of the victims’ children, 19 individual bank accounts of GHS1 million each have been established at Stanbic Bank. These include 13 trust funds for minor children and six fixed deposit accounts for adult children (five of the late Dr Samuel Sarpong and the eldest daughter of the late Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna).
“These accounts will be professionally managed to safeguard and invest the funds, ensuring sustainable growth while covering the children’s educational expenses as they grow,” he explained.
Funding for these packages was made possible through a government contribution of GHS 8.4 million and over GHS 10 million donated by corporate organisations and the public.
President Mahama also presented families with Legacy Boxes containing investment certificates, commemorative medallions, personal letters from the President, and details of a healthcare package.
Under the Nationwide Medical Insurance Premier Plan, all dependants have been enrolled in a top-tier healthcare coverage plan valued at GHS 3 million annually per beneficiary, providing them access to 942 accredited healthcare facilities across Ghana.
“While the nation mourned collectively, no grief has been greater than that borne by the spouses, children, and loved ones left behind,” President Mahama said, reassuring the families of the nation’s enduring solidarity.
Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, Nana Oye Bampoe-Addo, said the initiative is aimed at offering the families closure and ensuring that the 19 surviving children are fully supported as they shape Ghana’s future.
