Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has explained why he has significantly reduced the number of people in his inner circle.
Speaking in an interview with Vibe Magazine, the singer said changes in his lifestyle, marriage, family responsibilities and career have made him prefer a smaller and more productive circle.
Davido explained that he can no longer accommodate the large number of people who used to surround him earlier in his career.
“Now I live with the kids and my wife. I can’t have 100 people in my house like before,” he said.
However, he stressed that distancing himself from a large entourage does not mean abandoning the people who have supported him. According to him, he has helped several people establish businesses and become financially independent.
“I’ve set everybody up financially,” he noted.
The singer said he now expects people close to him to have something meaningful to contribute rather than simply staying around him.
“If you’re around me, get something to do. What business do you want to do, he questioned.
Davido also revealed that he rewards individuals who bring business opportunities to him, regardless of how big or small the deal may be.
“If you bring a deal for me, I’ll let you get your 10%,”he stated.
He noted that having fewer people around him has also changed his approach to making music. Unlike his earlier recording sessions, which often involved large groups and a party-like atmosphere, he now prefers a more focused environment.
“When it’s time to work, we got to get to it,” he added.
Davido further identified respect as one of the most important qualities he expects from people around him. He said he does not tolerate individuals who mistreat others, particularly women.
“Respect. Definitely. Like when I see somebody acting out of character, respect to people. Respect a woman. Respect in general,” he said.
The singer attributed this mindset to his upbringing, saying his family taught him to care for and support others.
“I was brought up to take care of people as well,” he disclosed.
