A magistrate of the Kaneshie District Court, Ms Ama Dokua, has cautioned prosecutors and investigators of suspects in the Western Togoland case brought before the court, to handle the defendants with care.
Ms Ama Dokua, in addressing an issue brought to the attention of the court by a lawyer of the defendants, stated that the court will not countenace any act of maltreatment or abuse of human rights in dealing with the suspects of the case under trial.
According to her, the suspects remain guiltless until full trial when the court would determine their fate.
The lawyer, Justice Syrem Sai, told the court that a family member of one of his clients was arrested and maltreated for his continuous presence in the court, adding that they [lawyers] also find it difficult to meet with their clients, therefore the need for the court to intervene.
The court however urged the investigators to expidite their investigations and forward the docket to the Athorney-Generals Office for advice.
On January 27, 2020 a group of 22 persons were presented before the court for continuation of proceedings.
The 22 accused persons who appeared before the court included a suspected fake lawyer who was nabbed for representing some of the secessionists in court.
Others are Nene Kwaku Agblorm II, aka Joshua Tawiah Agbolorm, Abednego Dzereke Mawuena, Emmanuel Hayford Afedo, Richard Doglo Ametepe, Benjamin Kplivi, Samuel Wor, Charles Elo, Richard Kwasi Norgbordzi, Stephen Kpexor and Ebenezer Nyaletasi.
The rest are Cephas Zodanu, Moses Gadago, Ernest Dzitor, Vincent Amaglo Gakpetor, Atigah Dziwornu, aka Adonis; Godwin Adzowu, Samuel Yoa Fiagbedzi, Samuel Atsu Gagbetor, Joseph Nyamewu, Afetorgbe Kpogo and Dennis Seyram Benson.
They are standing trial on charges of conspiracy to commit crime, namely, treason felony, causing unlawful damage to the state.
