The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has indicated that government would meet with evacuated students from Ukraine to discuss issues revolving around their educational needs.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kweku Ampratwum-Sarpong, said that the scheduled meeting is aimed at finding appropriate ways in which the students can continue with their education.
He stated that government is keen on settling on the future of the students.
Angelonline.com.gh reported days ago that some students refused to flee from Ukraine to safeguard their education.
According to the Vice President of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) in Ukraine, Samuel Selorm Dzemakey, some of these students are final year students who have undergone six years of study in medicine and would complete in June.
“Some of the students are final year students who are due to complete in June and thus afraid their study and completion would be prolonged if they leave,” he disclosed on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning Show on Wednesday, March 2.
But speaking in an interview with Citi News, Kweku Ampratwum-Sarpong said that “the meeting is to deliberate on ways government would support the students continue their academic calendar.”
“The meeting will also have the parents of the students, and other relevant stakeholders. There will also be the Ghana Psychological Society to continue with the support we are trying to put in place”, he added.
The NUGS Vice President also that aside disrupting their studies, another challenge students faced has to do with the payment of school fees, which he says “is not easy.”
He, however, declared that most schools are on break following the raging tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Lectures, he said, have been moved online while most of his lecturers, particularly, the females have travelled to other countries.
