Train transformational leaders, not just teachers – Bryan Acheampong to Colleges of Education

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, has urged Colleges of Education across the country to focus on producing transformational leaders capable of changing lives, rather than merely training teachers who transfer information.

Speaking as the guest speaker at this year’s Founders’ Day celebration of the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education, he stressed the need for teacher education institutions to prepare graduates who can inspire innovation, critical thinking and positive societal change.

Addressing the gathering on the theme, “Celebrating Our Founders and Shaping the Future Ethos,” on Friday, May 29, 2026, he highlighted the rapidly evolving nature of education and the growing influence of technology in the classroom.

“We are training teachers to work in a world of artificial intelligence, digital classrooms, and technology-mediated learning. The question we must ask is this: Are the student-teachers leaving this campus equipped to teach in that world?” he asked.

Mr Acheampong noted that deficiencies in digital infrastructure within teacher-training institutions should not be viewed merely as administrative shortcomings but as a national challenge that has persisted and compounded over the years.

He called on stakeholders, including government, the church, traditional authorities, alumni, parents and guardians, to play their respective roles in addressing these gaps and ensuring that Colleges of Education are adequately equipped to meet the demands of 21st-century teaching and learning.

According to him, strengthening digital infrastructure and embracing innovation in teacher education are critical steps towards producing graduates who can effectively navigate and lead in an increasingly technology-driven educational environment.
