The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed heads of all basic schools in the public sector to ensure the safety of the students.
The directive comes after three teacher unions namely, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-G), and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) withdrew their services on November 4, 2022.
Their actions are in protest of the appointment of the new Director-general of the service, Dr. Eric Nkansah. They claim the new GES boss is not an educationist hence must not be allowed to head the sector.
However, a statement issued by GES and signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of Public Relations, on Monday, November 7, has called on school heads nationwide to keep the pupils safe during the strike.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has read from the media that the three Teacher Unions in the Pre-tertiary Education sector have declared withdrawal of their services effective Friday, November 4, 2022.
“Heads of public kindergarten and Primary Schools as well as Junior and Senior High Schools have been directed through the Regional and District Directors to mobilize their management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools,” the statement said.
