The New Patriotic Party’s Kennedy Agyapong has promised to turn the fortunes of the country around within two years by focusing on business development among other things.
The vociferous politician who seeks the nod of the party to lead it into the 2024 elections as flagbearer, said his experiences as a businessman will be the guide to transforming the economy.
“I will focus on business development. I have the experience to create jobs for the youth with my record of business life.
“My steel company when completed will employ over 1,000 workers. It is named after Ashanti – ‘ASHANTI STEEL’. I will run Ghana like a business, and unprecedented transformation will take place.”
The Assin Central Member of Parliament made the statement while addressing some market women in Kumasi, Ashanti region, as part of communicating his presidential ambitions to the people.
Speaking further about his vision to transform the economy, Mr Agyapong acknowledged the contributions of women to the country’s food supplies and promised to make the industry a competitive one.
“Women farm owners, farm partners, and farm labourers provide 70 to 80% of the country’s food.
“I have plans to create globally competitive industries, make commercial farming attractive like what pertains in Cote D’Ivoire, Tanzania and other industrial countries. Ghana is well endowed with minerals, and would be used to turn the economic fortunes of the country around,”.
He also reiterated his plans to establish a scholarship scheme with his presidential salary to fund the education of poor and needy students in the country.
“I will not take and enjoy my salary. It will be channelled as a scholarship to pay the fees of the poor, and I believe it will promote Ghana’s development in more ways than one.”
Kennedy Agyapong however, hinted that he would “rely on the counsel and wisdom of the traditional rulers” in his administration.
Meanwhile, he has pledged to give out 200 bulbs to replace the broken ones in the market and to fix meters to help resolve challenges posed to the traders by the use of a single meter.
