Old students of Akropong School for the Blind support calls for removal of Headmistress

The Progressive Old Students Association of the Akropong School for the Blind has called on the Ministry of Education, the First Lady and other stakeholders to treat as urgent issues raised by the students concerning the misconduct of the headmistress.

The Old Students Association says they will petition the Economic and Organized Crime Office, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the National Investigation Bureau (formerly BNI) to get involved in the ongoing investigations concerning Madam Mahela Narh, Headmistress of the school.

Mr Bismark Amoh, Secretary of the Progressive Old Students Association at a press conference to expatiate on the issues concerning Madam Narh said: “We do not believe that any independent and fair investigations can be done,” explaining that the alleged receivers of gifts from Madam Narh are those conducting the investigations.

“We understand that some bank accounts of the school which we alluded to earlier have been closed even though investigations are yet to be concluded,” Mr Amoh said.

He mentioned that another issue of great concern was the attempt to transfer some teachers from the school with the reason that they have been in the school for more than four years.

Mr Amoh said being blind does not mean their brains were not working, and pointed out that no teacher was behind the demonstration by the students.

“If the Ghana Education Service want to transfer teachers who have been in the school for more than four years, they should first transfer the headmistress who has been in the school for 12 years,” he said, pointing out that the teachers who were being transferred were only being victimized because they did not side with the headmistress.

Mr James Aryee- Mensah, a member of the Progressive Old Students Association, expressed worry that some media houses have trivialized the issue, asking questions like how can blind students know when someone was misconducting themselves.

Students of the Akropong School for the Blind embarked on a demonstration on Friday, the 14th of May, 2021 to demand the removal of the headmistress of the school Madam Mahela Narh.

The students said the headmistress has been abusing them and diverting items donated to the school to some high profile persons with the Ghana Education Service.
